Escaping January's Cold at Jake's in Treasure Beach, Jamaica

“You’re Jamaican me crazy!”
I know this sounds ridiculous, but one of my goals for 2020 is to travel more, especially as a family (despite the fact that we already travel quite a bit). I love going new places, plus this is Freya’s last year of middle school and I’ve heard that once high school begins kids cannot miss school.
So first on the list - Jamaica.
Parker has complained for years now that we only take “busy” vacations, which involve hiking and touring; whereas she really wants a “normal” vacation which involves going to a beach and do nothing all day. And I always want to travel in January because it is the heart of my slow season and I hate being cold (I also hate skiing, though I wish I liked it).
So Jakes in Jamaica seemed like the perfect choice for January’s long weekend. I’ve wanted to visit Jakes Resort for a few years now, ever since I read about it on A Cup of Jo. Plus, the (somewhat random) fact that it made Conde Nast Traveller’s best family hotels in the world list for 2019 only increased my curiosity.
We invited Dan’s mom to go with us and since there were six of us we booked Hope House villa. I’ll admit, the first day we all seemed a little off as we didn’t quite know how to handle doing nothing. But eventually we found our groove (even on a rainy day) and relaxed, swam, read books, watched netflix, and (honestly) slept a lot.
Much of Jamaica’s southern coastline is rocky, but there are some small, lovely beaches. And lots of stray dogs for Trout to play with. Our villa had an amazing staff and a small pool, that everyone seemed to love more than I thought they would.
There isn’t a lot to do in Treasure Beach, but I think that’s the point. All in all a very chill long weekend.
