A Sunny Winter Morning with the J Family and Luna the Dog (Arlington, VA)
/When I first started Darcy Troutman Photography my clients were all friends and neighbors (isn’t that how everyone starts?). But now most of the families I photograph are new to me - which is amazing as I love meeting people. But still, I miss photographing friends I’ve known for years.
I can’t remember how or when I first met the J family. When my kids were little, their twin daughters (H & G) were two of our go-to babysitters. They’d come over and make brownies and play make-believe - my kids wanted to see them all the time.
And in the evenings, we’d often run into the whole J family, walking Luna together.
Now the twins are in college and and Luna’s struggled through cancer (including the loss of a leg). The J family wanted these photos to remember everyone together before winter break ended and the girls returned to school. They thought it might be the girls last time with Luna. Unfortunately, they were right. Luna passed away about three weeks after we took these photos. And I cry when I look at them.
Sometimes I feel like what I do is so frivolous - after all nobody really NEEDS photos. But there’s something to be said for memories, even those that make you cry.
