Our January Mom-Daughter Hiking Trip through La Gomera (Canary Islands, Spain)

Lately, I don’t recognizе the signs
I’m in the back of the pickup most of the time
It’s all in the past, but the past is still alive

There are many downsides to having a child in college (the most obvious one being that they don’t live with you anymore), but I’ve found that several upsides exist as well - one of those being that Connecticut College gives students a full month off for winter break. So since both Freya and I love to hike (my other children, unfortunately, do not) and since my business slows down in January, a vacation seemed like the perfect way to spend some time with my oldest child.

As I’ve mentioned in several blogposts, I’m a huge fan of On Foot Holidays, a company that organizes hiking trips throughout Europe. A few years ago they created a winter route on La Gomera in Spain’s Canary Islands, where daytime January temps rarely go above 80 degrees or below 60 degrees (ie - perfect hiking weather). And, even better, United Airlines flies directly to Tenerife from Newark (and from Tenerlife it’s only a 50 minute ferry ride to the much smaller island of La Gomera).

This is my fifth trip organized by On Foot (Freya’s third) and, as always, they did a great job. There is pretty much nothing for tourists to do on La Gomera but hike and it was sort of bizarre to see all of these small towns full of people with hiking poles and colorful backpacks.
